Original insect illustration: “Coppery Emerald Dragonfly”
Gouache on Paper 8″ X 10″, 2012
The Coppery Emerald (Somatochlora georgiana) is a beautiful insect, and indeed is a lovely copper color. Unlike the other Emeralds in its family, which are aptly named for their bright green eyes, this one has grey and brown eyes that match the warm, earthy color of its body. This dragonfly painting was fascinating to create; I had a lot of fun studying the complex vein pattern of its wings, which are rendered here in gouache and colored pencil.
This listing is for an original unmatted and unframed gouache painting. Gouache is similar to watercolor, but is more opaque, allowing for brighter, richer colors.
Painting measures 8″ X 10″ (20.3 X 24.5 cm) to fit in a standard frame.
It is painted on 140 lb (300 g/m2), acid free, archival quality hot press watercolor paper, using high quality gouache paints. The piece is finished with a coat of spray varnish.
This painting is signed with a monogram and year in the lower right-hand corner, and title, date and artist’s name on back.
