Original insect illustration: “Common Stag Beetle”
Gouache on Paper 8″ X 10″, 2012
The stag beetle is impressive enough for its large size, but the male’s oversized mandibles make this creature that much more remarkable. The common stag beetle, Lucanus capreolus, can be black or reddish-brown; I illustrated this one in a rich mahogany color, which I think gives the finished piece an interesting vintage look.
This listing is for an original unmatted and unframed gouache painting. Gouache is similar to watercolor, but is more opaque, allowing for brighter, richer colors.
Painting measures 8″ X 10″ (20.3 X 24.5 cm) to fit in a standard frame.
It is painted on 140 lb (300 g/m2), acid free, archival quality hot press watercolor paper, using high quality gouache paints. The painting is finished with a coat of spray varnish.
This painting is signed with a monogram and year in the lower right-hand corner, and title, date and artist’s name on back.
